Ted Cruz SpeechSen. Ted Cruz of Texas and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have won the 2016 Republican and Democratic Iowa caucuses — though Clinton's victory was extremely narrow.

The first voting in the 2016 presidential nominating contests shined some light on how candidates may fare throughout the rest of the campaign.

On the Republican side, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida seems to have firmed up support as the establishment candidate with a solid third-place finish. For the Democrats, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) pulled off a near tie with national front-runner Clinton.

The caucuses also thinned out the field for both parties — former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and former Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland suspended their campaigns.

The next voting takes place in New Hampshire next Tuesday.
