Billionaire Alan Howard Is Building A Huge Estate On The Beach In Israel

tel aviv soldiers beachUpdate: A source familiar with the matter reached out to let us know that some of the numbers originally reported by Ynetnews were off. We've revised them in the story below.

Alan Howard, the billionaire founder of Brevan Howard Asset Management, is building what could be the largest--and most expensive--home in Israel, Israeli news website Ynetnews reports.

Construction on the estate is already underway in Herzliya Pituach, an affluent beachfront neighborhood near Tel Aviv. The estate will reportedly span some 12,000 square feet, and a guest villa will span another 8,000 square feet.

It will cost under $50 million to build (Ynetnews had reported the price tag on the home would be $100 million).

Howard, who moved from London to Geneva in 2010, bought most of the land from businessman Lenny Recanati in 2006, in what was considered to be one of the most expensive real estate deals of the year.

REPORT: The US Used Russia To Issue An Ultimatum On Military Action To Iran

Hillary Clinton

The U.S. has sent a message through Russia to Iran that the upcoming six-nation negotiations in April are its “last chance” to avoid military action, a Russian diplomat told the Russian daily Kommersant.

Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Secretary of State, relayed the warning to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the UN Security Council meeting in New York on Monday, the diplomat said, since “Washington does not maintain its own relations” with Tehran.

The diplomat also said there was a likelihood that war would begin "before the end of the year."

"The Israelis are, in essence, blackmailing [U.S. President Barack] Obama. They are putting him in a difficult position: either he supports war or he himself will lose the support [of the influential Jewish lobby].”

There was no immediate response to the report from the U.S. State Department, The Telegraph reports. However, Sergei Ryabkov, a deputy foreign minister, told Kommersant that such threats were “unprofessional” and that “there is never a last chance.”

Despite Russia’s anti-war stance on Iran, it has prepared for the possibility of a war, which would bring with it the problems of huge refugee influx, as well as the possible re-ignition of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh dispute. The contingency plans are classified, according to RT.

The P5+1 group of countries (the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany) accepted an offer last week from Tehran for fresh talks on its nuclear program, which the West and the IAEA fears is a front to create a nuclear weapon, Reuters reports. Iran continues to claim it is only trying to develop nuclear power for civilian purposes. Israel has also indicated it could launch a unilateral attack.

The US Could Impose Sanctions On India If It Doesn't Cut Iranian Oil Imports

$

india-us-america-obama-manmohan-singh

The Obama administration could impose sanctions on India this summer if it fails to reduce its purchases of Iranian oil, government officials told Bloomberg earlier this week.

The U.S. law, ratified in December applies to any country that doesn’t make a “significant” reduction in its Iranian crude oil purchases during the first half of this year. So if India does not cut back enough on Iranian oil imports, Obama could bar access to the U.S. banking system for any Indian bank processing oil payments through Iran’s central bank.

However, the claim was called "highly speculative" by officials on Friday, the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times reports. Officials also said they were having “productive conversations” with their Indian counterparts on possible alternatives (Saudi Arabia and Iraq) to Iranian oil for India, which imports almost 80 percent of its crude.

While India hasn’t stopped purchasing Iranian crude, the government has told processors to seek alternate supplies and gradually reduce dependence on Iran due to increasing pressure from the U.S., according to The Times Of India. However, the Indian commerce ministry's well-publicized efforts to ramp up trade with Iran in other areas has been a thorn in the side of the powerful pro-Israeli lobby in U.S.

India says reduction in Iranian imports would begin to show only next month, since annual crude contracts with Iran run from April to March. But already, New Delhi’s dependence on Tehran has gone down, from 16.5 percent in 2008-09 to 13 percent in 2009-10 and 11 percent in 2010-11.

"In fact, I think in a number of instances, the actions of countries and their banks are better than the public statements that we sometimes hear them making," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a Congressional hearing earlier this month.

Oil Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai have said India will continue to buy Iranian oil to meet its growing energy needs. While India has followed UN sanctions against Iran, it continues to oppose unilateral U.S. sanctions, according to The Economic Times.

"...given the imperative of meeting the energy needs of millions of Indians, an automatic replacement of all Iranian oil imports, is not a simple matter of selection, or a realistic option," the Indian embassy said in a statement.

It Looks Like The US Still Hasn't Settled On A World Bank Nominee

$

Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With just five days to go for nations to put forward nominees to lead the World Bank, there are few signs the United States has finalized its choice to lead the global development lender.

The United States has held the presidency of the Bank since its founding after World War Two, while a European has always led its sister institution - the International Monetary Fund.

But Washington has yet to publicly identify a candidate and some observers think the delay could signal that the White House is having a hard time convincing possible candidates to take the job. The White House and Treasury Department have declined to comment.

Sources with knowledge of the administration's thinking say the hope was to convince a woman to enter the race to replace Robert Zoellick, who has said he will step down when his term expires at the end of June.

Naming a woman could go some way to address calls from emerging-market nations for a change in the status quo. A woman has never led the bank.

Two sources said Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was a leading contender. However, it is not clear she wants the job. Rice's name often surfaces as a possible candidate to succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.

When asked last week how she would help South Sudan if she was president of the World Bank, Rice replied: "Ridiculously hypothetical."

Senator John Kerry and PepsiCo's Indian-born CEO Indra Nooyi had also made an Obama administration short list, according to a source, although Kerry has publicly ruled out the job and another source said Nooyi was no longer in contention.

Another short-list member, Lawrence Summers, a former adviser to President Barack Obama and a one-time Treasury secretary, has declined to comment. He told Reuters he would leave the selection process to the officials in charge of it.

LEAVING THE DOOR OPEN

The delay in identifying a U.S. nominee could leave the door open to a dark-horse candidate from the United States. It has also given other nations time to consider their own nominees.

"It wouldn't be the first time in history that the White House had to scramble a bit," said Whitney Debevoise, a former director to the World Bank board.

"I think they have lost the opportunity to put a name out there early and make it uncontested," he added. "Usually ... if the U.S. puts a name out there, then nobody else wants to put their name up because they know they don't have a chance."

Emerging and developing countries have been pushing to have more say at both the World Bank and IMF, and have said the decision on Zoellick's successor should be merit-based.

Developing and emerging market economies are currently in consultations on putting forward names of non-U.S. candidates. The dilemma for developing regions, however, is finding candidates willing to come forward in a race in which the outcome is felt to be pre-ordained.

Indeed, the two most talked about names among developing countries are former World Bank Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, now Nigeria's finance minister, and Trevor Manuel, the South African national planning minister. Former Indonesian finance minister and current World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and Mexico's central bank governor Agustin Carstens have ruled themselves out.

World Bank board sources said there were also talks under way about possibly appointing a candidate from a developing or emerging economy to head the Bank's private-sector lender, the International Finance Corp. IFC CEOs have mainly been European.

The World Bank's 24-member board, which represents all of the institution's 187 member countries, has set a deadline for Friday for nominations to lead the Bank, and has said it would decide on the next president within a month.

ONE MAN RACE

U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, is the only formal candidate to have emerged so far. He has been formally nominated by Bhutan and a cluster of developing countries including East Timor, Jordan, Kenya, Namibia and Malaysia.

"Jeffrey Sachs is a good economist and a very good candidate, but we expect to see the rest of the names and what follows in the process," Mexican Finance Minister Jose Antonio Meade said on Sunday.

Last week, 27 lawmakers wrote to President Barack Obama to "strongly" encourage him to nominate Sachs. Sachs, whose self-proclaimed candidacy aims to challenge what he sees as a history of political appointments by the White House, acknowledges he lacks the Obama administration's support.

"They're not talking to me," he told Reuters.

With his early nomination, Sachs has had a head start in lobbying for support among developing countries where he has a proven track record on issues such as education, health, climate change and fighting poverty.

"I have spoken with at least a couple of dozen leaders around the world in the last week and believe I have strong worldwide support in every region of the developing countries, and a lot of support in Europe as well," Sachs said.

"For the European countries, they are not surprisingly saying that they are overwhelmingly likely to defer to the U.S. nominee and that they are waiting for that," he added.

Sachs said while the United States was still likely to determine who gets the job, a desire among developing countries to end tradition suggested that was not a sure bet.

"I don't think it is automatic because of feelings that this is an important institution and an important moment, and I don't think the U.S. has simply the green light to choose anybody."

Officials argued that it is important for the United States to retain the presidency of the bank, otherwise political support and funding for the institution could erode, given that Congress is focused on budget cutting.

The United States is the World Bank's largest donor.

Hillary Clinton text

Texts from Hillary is the cool new political Tumblr that has been making waves in the past week. According to Talking Points Memosupporters Stacy Lambe and Adam Smith created the site, and it blew up in the first 24 hours, generating tens of thousands of links across social media.

And apparently, they have a fan among those thousands — the namesake for the site. Hillary submitted her first photo to the site today. It's above.

UPDATE: Here's Hillary's submission and autograph to Adam Smith. She used the words "lolz" and "Hillz." So, that happened.

New Party Photos In Colombia Officially Cement Hillary Clinton As The Most Badass Politician Right Now

Important news, everyone: Hillary Clinton drinks beer.

Yes, yes. Hillary "knocked back a brew" or "slugged back a beer" this weekend in Cartagena, Colombia, the New York Post reports, before splashing the image on its front cover. She was in town with President Obama for the Summit of the Americas, where a scandal involving the Secret Service and alleged solicitation of prostitutes has grabbed most headlines from the weekend.

But Clinton stole away the front page of the Post this morning, as she drank beer and "danced the night away" at a Havana-themed nightclub in Cartagena.

The Post has all the important details:

• She drank a Colombian-brewed Aguila cerveza, a signature Colombian brew.

• She danced the rubma.

• Clinton spokesman Phillipe Reines was in his hotel room, "reading," when all this was going on. Someone got left out.

Coming on the heels of Texts From Hillary, this only adds to Clinton's revamped image as the politician all the cool kids like.

Some Twitter reaction:

Texts From Hillary, of course, was the viral Tumblr that ran for exactly one week. In its first day and after the first meme (below) was created on April 4, the site exploded. By the end, even "Hillz" signed her approval with a submission to the Tumblr site, thanking the two creators of the site for all the "lolz."

The Secret Service Is Looking Into Ted Nugent's Potential Threat Against President Obama

$

So, over the weekend at the National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis, Ted Nugent said that "if Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will be either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

Now the Secret Service is looking into the comment.

"We are aware of it, and we are conducting an appropriate follow-up," Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie told Business Insider via phone. He did not say if the agency was treating the statement as a threat against the President. Oh, and Nugent has also endorsed Mitt Romney, which has prompted Democrats to turn this into their own sort of Hilary Rosen situation.

Nugent's interview, video of which is below via Right Wing Watch, is one of mind-boggling proportions, even for the outlandish statements the "Motor City Madman" has made in the past. He gets into it around the 1:40 mark in the first video, and calls the Obama administration "vile, evil and America-hating." He calls Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "criminals." And he warns that if Obama is elected, the U.S. will become "a suburb of Indonesia."

Before that statement, which caused the most controversy, there is the completely plausible (read: not plausible at all) analogy of Obama and other Democrats to coyotes.

"If the coyote's in your living room, p*ssing on your couch, it's not the coyotes fault. It's your fault for not shooting him," Nugent said. Several supporters in the background say, "That's right."

He moves onto more mainstream, but crucial, talking points of "I'm not taking this crap anymore" and "Leave my paycheck alone" before he goes back to the crazy — a Braveheart analogy.

"We are patriots. We are Braveheart," Nugent said. "We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?"

Well, yes, a lot of questions, actually.

Anyway, the Democratic National Committee has released a statement from Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz calling on Romney to condemn Nugent's statements. She also refers to Nugent as a "Romney surrogate."

"Mitt Romney surrogate Ted Nugent made offensive comments about President Obama and November’s elections this weekend that are despicable, deplorable and completely beyond the pale. He called the Administration 'vile,' 'evil' and 'America-hating,' and said much worse. Yet what have we heard from Mitt Romney and the Republican Party, who should be outraged that someone representing them is using language like this to make a political point? Absolutely nothing."

You might remember back in 2007, when Ted Nugent was again being crazy and made what some thought were threats against Obama. He told him then to "suck on" a couple of machine guns he was holding up.

He endorsed Mitt Romney back when it still wasn't completely cool to do so, after a "long heart&soul conversation." That's when his son, Tagg, tweeted this:

Tagg Romney Ted Nugent

Mitt Romney's Newest Spokesman Is Already In BIG Twitter Trouble And Deleting Tweets

Richard Grenell

Richard Grenell, a new foreign policy and national security spokesman for the Mitt Romney campaign, has embarked on quite the deleting spree over the weekend.

Almost 1,000 of his tweets? Gone. His personal website? Gone.

Why? Probably something to do with the fact that a lot of his tweets have been controversial. He tells Politico

my tweets were written to be tongue-in-cheek and humorous but I can now see how they can also be hurtful. I didn’t mean them that way and will remove them from twitter. I apologize for any hurt they caused.

Some of his favorite targets: Various members of the media. Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Rachel Maddow. Even Newt Gingrich and wife Callista.

Politico, The Huffington Post and Think Progress have all taken looks at this and found some of the more controversial tweets that have since been scrubbed from Grenell's account. In the Twitter campaign of 2012, it's mind-boggling that: A.) The Romney campaign didn't take a closer look at this from the beginning; and B.) That these weren't scrubbed sooner.

Like this one:

Michelle Obama Richard Grenell

According to The Huffington Post, Grenell went from 7,577 tweets to 6,759 pretty quickly

Politico points out some of his attacks on Newt Gingrich's extramarital affairs, and shots at his wife Callista's appearance. In tweets that have all since been taken down:

• "do you think Callista's hair snaps on?"

• "Callista stands there like she is wife No. 1"

• “Newt: My 1st Lady knows what it’s like to be 2nd and 3rd….” and later, in the same debate: “Newt compliments all the wives proving he can’t pick just one 1st lady.”

Another target has been Rachel Maddow. Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead retweeted this one:

Richard Grenell

Grenell himself has been a target of attacks since the Romney campaign hired him. Grenell is gay, which prompted Bryan Fischer, the director of issue analysis for the American Family Association, to tweet that Romney's appointment of him was like telling the "pro-family community" to "drop dead."

Rush Limbaugh On Hillary Clinton: 'All She Is Is A Secretary'

Rush Limbaugh was at it again this morning.

Limbaugh spent several minutes on his radio show ranting today about how Secertary of State Hillary Clinton made Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

"Exactly how influential is Hillary Clinton," he asked. "What has she ever accomplished as Secretary of State?"

Limbaugh then added:

Mrs. Clinton worked very hard throughout her whole life, and she stuck by her husband. We all know what he did. He humiliated her. He embarrassed her. Affair, after affair, after affair.

And then came his punchline:

And now Hilary has reached the pinnacle, and all she is is a secretary. The Secretary of Defense [sic].

Har, har.

Limbaugh later corrected himself saying that Clinton is the Secretary of State, but still found the joke rather funny. This, of course, isn't the first time Limbaugh has taken his shots at Clinton. In February, Limbaugh joked after playing a clip of Clinton saying, "And people ask why the divorce rate in America is so high."

Bin Laden raid Situation Room

NBC is out with a preview of its look inside the White House Situation Room a year after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

One of the most fascinating moments comes as Obama and staff describes the famous photo that shows the tense moments beforehand inside the Situation Room. The most glaring reaction comes from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is covering her mouth in the photo.

In the preview, Obama reveals that moment came as one of the Navy SEAL Team Six's helicopters was "having some problems."

"There's silence at this point inside the room," Obama tells NBC's Brian Williams.

This is how Hillary described it: "That's how I usually look when my husband drags me to an action movie." She also said it was "just an extraordinary experience and a great privilege to be part of.”

Hillary Clinton has just been tearing it up on the pop culture circuit lately.

First, there was TextsFromHillary. Then, there were pictures of the secretary of state knocking back a brew in Cartagena.

Now, Clinton is at it again with this flirty "rejection letter" she sent to How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel.

Apparently, Segel had told Us Weekly in an interview how much he would love to star in a movie with the secretary of state.

"I just feel like she would be good at comedy," he told the magazine. "I think you can feel it from a mile away."

Well, Clinton got wind of that and sent this letter his way.

Jason Segel Hillary Clinton

It all started when "How I Met Your Mother" star Jason Segel told Us Weekly that he thinks Hillary Clinton would make for an excellent co-star.

"I just feel like she would be good at comedy. I think you can feel it from a mile away," said Segel, adding that the Secretary of State could star in "Sarah Marshall 2: This Time It's Personal."

Last week, Segel appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," where he revealed he also uses Clinton as his default answer when people ask who the mother is in "How I Met Your Mother."

Apparently, Clinton got wind of Segel's antics and nipped his little joke in the bud by sending the actor this hilarious letter obtained by Politico:

Besides, Clinton is way too busy texting to engage in any Hollywood nonsense.

Hillary Clinton Is So Cool That Even Bristol Palin Is Defending Her

Hillary Clinton Drudge

On Day 2 of the daily tracking of Bristol Palin's Patheos blog, we learn just how hot Hillary Clinton is right now.

Bristol Palin is rushing to Hillary's defense over a recent photo that made the internet rounds, showing her without makeup. It looked like it was started — or at least advanced heavily — into the mainstream when it was blasted as the lead "story" on Drudge on Monday.

Bristol titles her post, "On This One, I'm Team Hillary."

When people choose to mock young impressionable females and even more mature national political leaders, it spreads the lie that the value of women resides in their appearance.  As women, we should resist the urge to laugh at our sisters, both Democrats and Republicans alike. Plus, Hillary looks good! I think we should give her credit for not having a make up artist following her around and being comfortable in her own skin.

Good on her for being consistent. When the Sarah Palin-Newsweek cover flap was going on in 2009, Drudge's headline expressed that she was "angered" about the cover.

Then Bristol Palin posted a photo of her mother without makeup — what she "looks like 90 percent of the time."

So there you have it: Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, intertwined to make a point in a Bristol Palin blog post. The world is still here.

And, fresh off Texts From Hillary, party photos in Colombia, and flirty rejection letters to Jason Segel, Hillary Clinton legend of cool continues.

Nancy Pelosi Is Publicly Urging Hillary Clinton To Run For President in 2016

Texts From Hillary

The Hillary Clinton-for-President talk is ramping up a full election cycle before she would even run.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took her wishes public in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle published Sunday.

"Why wouldn't she run? She's a magnificent Secretary of State," Pelolsi told the paper. "She's our shot," Pelosi added.

This comes on the heels of a Gallup poll that showed that Clinton is within one point of her record favorability rating — she's up to 66 percent, her highest since 1998. And her unfavorability rating — at 29 percent — ties a record low set in 1993. The favorability ratings are more in her, well, favor, than they were as she geared up for a presidential run in 2008. Gallup notes that her favorability rating dipped below 50 percent when mired in a long nomination process against Barack Obama in 2008.

Hillary Clinton favorability

Clinton has been building her "badass" brand as of late — from her embrace of Texts from Hillary to the Colombia party photos to the flirty letter to Jason Segal. She's so popular that even Bristol Palin defended her when The Drudge Report led with a photo of her without makeup.

Speculation is starting to ramp up about a potential 2016 run, despite Clinton's own swatting down of the notion. Over at The Washington Post, Aaron Blake identifies three prominent Democrats: Pelosi, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, and ... Hillary's husband, President Bill Clinton.

“She’s told you and everybody else that she thinks she’ll probably never run for office again,” he said. “But I’ve been there; I know what happens when you go through this decompression after years of relentless high-pressure activity. And I just think she needs to rest up, do some things she cares about, and whatever she decides to do, I’ll support.”

Russia Is Sending Attack Helicopters To Syria; 'Will Escalate The Conflict Dramatically'

Russia is sending combat helicopters into Syria, according to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Clinton said the U.S. is concerned as the helicopters "will escalate the conflict quite dramatically," reports the AP.

The uprising in Syria against President Al-Assad's government has been down-spiraling into a civil war

Russia's deployment of helicopters suggests it is willing to be condemned for defending the Syrian government, which has been blasted by the international community for violence against its own people.

The AP points out this turn of events follows Russia's previous statements saying it wouldn't supply weapons to the Syrian government to shut down the uprising. Secretary Clinton is now trying to persuade Russia to join the U.S. in promoting a "political transition" in Syria instead of supplying military hardware that could escalate the conflict.

We recently reported the Pentagon stating "We get paid to be ready" in response to questions about U.S. preparedness concerning the deteriorating situation in Syria, which has been characterized by massacres and horrific bloodshed.

REPORT: Tim Geithner Wanted Hillary Clinton To Replace Him As Treasury Secretary

tim geithner hillary clinton

The Washington Post reports today that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner proposed Hillary Clinton step in to replace him at the Treasury so that he could step down in the spring of 2011, but that the idea was eventually nixed by the White House.

From the Post report

Before he could depart, Geithner had to convince the White House. He needed to find someone who could glide through Senate confirmation, comprehend the growing debt crises, here and abroad, and communicate administration goals in the upcoming debt-ceiling debate to Congress, to Wall Street, and to the world.

The talks gained traction inside the White House before being scuttled shortly before the debt-ceiling talks on Capitol Hill intensified, according to two current and one former administration official.

The cabinet shuffle made sense, according to the officials, because Clinton could fulfill all those requirements. Plus, she was ready for a break from what she had described as a “grueling,” travel-heavy job [as Secretary of State.]"

According to the Post, Clinton actually expressed "cautious interest" in the switch, and Wall Street was pretty sold on the idea, given Clinton's ties to the financial services industry and sharp political intuition.

But the White House was reportedly worried about Clinton's loyal aides, who had frequently clashed with the President's staff when she took over the Secretary of State post.

Plus, President Obama really didn't want Geithner to leave, especially with the looming debt ceiling showdown. Eventually, Obama sweet-talked Geither's into letting him stay, at least through the 2012 election.

The Mainstream Media Is Biased And Wrong On Syria

$

Syrian Army

Friday, we read in the New York Times and elsewhere about one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s most important supporters and allies having defected. The impression one gets is that Assad’s government is in a state of collapse— and this gives credibility to those pushing for Assad to turn over power.

But what the media are not mentioning is that Brigadier General Manaf Tlass did not defect directly from the Assad inner circle. He had already fallen into disfavor early in the uprising and lost his command in May 2011—14 months ago. If you had that additional piece of information, you would interpret the news reports in a totally different way.

When a piece of evidence that contradicts the overall impression is absent from the reportage, the reportage itself is almost worthless.

As are reports of horrific events without adequate fact-checking and follow-up. Remember the Houla massacre? Who carried that out?

Houla Whoops

The media told us that more than 100 people, including women and children, were brutally slaughtered at close range in the village of Houla in late May. The bloodshed, reported around the world, was ascribed to a militia, the Shabiha, which is loyal to Assad. Here’s an example, from the BBC website:

Survivors of the massacre in Syria’s Houla region have told the BBC of their shock and fear as regime forces entered their homes and killed their families….

[snip]

Most witnesses who spoke to the BBC said they believed that the army and shabiha militiamen were responsible.

“We were in the house, they went in, the shabiha and security, they went in with Kalashnikovs and automatic rifles,” said survivor Rasha Abdul Razaq.

Later, a dribble of accounts cast doubt on this, since the people killed were, by and large, themselves supporters of Assad. But few heard about these. The BBC report did not say who Rasha was, or provide any evidence that she actually was there, or that if she was, she had any basis for saying that the killers were identifiable as to their affiliation. BBC quoted one other source, who did not provide a name.  Despite the thinness of this material, the BBC story was picked up all over the world, and became perhaps the definitive account.

Hence, you probably were unaware of an article from the Frankfurter Allgemeine-Zeitung, a traditional and serious German newspaper for whom I’ve written in the past. It published a report a month ago from a correspondent who got eyewitness accounts from people who he says had visited the Houla area. The correspondent, Rainer Hermann, says that these eyewitnesses were Assad opponents, yet discovered that government backers were not responsible for the massacre.

Hermann’s sources described the events as follows: anti-Assad rebels attacked army roadblocks just outside Houla, which had been intended to protect villages, where the majority are members of Assad’s Alawi sect, from Sunni militias. The soldiers at the roadblocks, overwhelmed, called for backup, which led to a 90-minute battle, in which both sides sustained extensive fatalities.

It was in this time frame that the unidentified militias entered Houla.

As Hermann wrote June 7:

“According to eyewitness accounts…those killed were almost exclusively from families belonging to Houla’s Alawi and Shia minorities. Over 90% of Houla’s population are Sunnis. Several dozen members of a family were slaughtered, which had converted from Sunni to Shia Islam. Members of the Shomaliya, an Alawi family, were also killed, as was the family of a Sunni member of the Syrian parliament who is regarded as a collaborator. Immediately following the massacre, the perpetrators are supposed to have filmed their victims and then presented them as Sunni victims in videos posted on the internet.

…”Their findings contradict allegations of the rebels, who had blamed the Shabiha militias which are close to the regime.”

Thus, Hermann seemingly was able to do something that most of the Western reporters have been unable to do: find opponents of Assad who nevertheless may be willing to provide accounts that do not serve their own interests.

Of course, we could do with more information on Hermann’s sources. How do we know they were really in Houla? How do we know they are really opponents of Assad, not just pretending to be? Their story of inter-communal strikes makes more sense than the one that went around the world and turned so many people who had not been paying attention into supporters of toppling Assad. But nevertheless, everyone needs to provide more detail so we can try to ascertain what is true.

Almost all of the accounts in major news organization stories are characterized as being from the opposition, almost all portray everything as caused solely by the regime, and almost all add the disclaimer that the information “could not be independently verified.”

Talking Turkey

Though conventional journalism likes to advertise that it is “objective” and doesn’t take sides, I don’t recall hearing much from the Syrian regime’s point of view, beyond general and unconvincing denials following reports of regime wrongdoing. One almost gets the impression that the Syrian government does not wish to be heard.

But that turns out not to be the case.

With Syria’s neighbor Turkey increasingly the leading edge for NATO on toppling Assad, it’s interesting that a Turkish newspaper was willing to hear what the Syrian leader had to say:

In an interview with the Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, Bashar Assad went after Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with an extraordinarily interesting critique. A version translated into English by the Syrian news agency, SANA, shows Assad  stressing his goodwill toward the Turkish people in the  first part of the interview, then raising questions about the motives of the alliance seeking to overthrow him:

Assad: …. Today, Erdogan is shedding the tears of hypocrites for the Syrian people. Why hasn’t he cried for those killed in some Gulf countries, although they are innocent, peaceful and unarmed? Why isn’t he speaking about democracy in some Gulf countries?

Journalist: Which country?

Assad: Qatar, for instance. Why didn’t he do anything after the Marmara ship incident except shouting? Why did he challenge Israel, and then suddenly agreed to deploy the missile shield in Turkey? Did he deploy it in order to protect Turkey from the attack of a hostile country? Did America build these bases in order to protect itself against this region? Which country in the region has the capability to threaten America? No country.

          [snip]

You don’t have to be a fan of Assad (and who is?) to find it worthwhile to read his comments.  Hearing, almost for the first time, from the other side in a conflict gives one a rush—reminds me of a rule we were taught in journalism school but which never seemed to come up again, except in the most superficial ways :To find out what is really going on, make a real effort to speak to both sides.

All Hillary, All the Time

While the Western media simply ignores statements from the Syrian establishment, it functions as the flip side of the Syrian government press agency, publishing a relentless stream of declarations from the establishment trying to bring Assad down. For example, again from The Times, Hillary Clinton’s well-covered remarks on Tlass:

Later at a news conference, Mrs. Clinton said that General Tlass’s reported defection and those of other senior military officials had sent a powerful message that Mr. Assad’s government was on its way out. She described General Tlass as “a very close and longtime ally” of Mr. Assad and his father.

So what you have is Hillary Clinton being willing to distort the Tlass development, and the media only too happy to go along.

There’s a growing body of evidence/ that we Americans are being lied to by our government, with nary a peep from the people’s representatives in the press. That’s one development, sadly, that really is not news.
